Directed by Eli Roth… wait, what?
I never read The House with the Clock in its Walls when I was kid, but I vividly remember its cover for some reason. It has the same “scarier than the actual book” feel as those illustrations from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books. The new movie based on the book does not have those feelings looking at this trailer, but it is directed by Eli Roth so maybe it could.
Roth hasn’t really had a good movie in a long while, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that he doesn’t seem to know when he needs to reel himself in. Maybe the limits of a children’s film will allow him to get back to directing the kind of horror he built his name on or maybe Jack Black and Cate Blanchett will just carry the whole thing by being charming. It does look like a more charming Harry Potter kind of thing.
The House with the Clock in its Walls will release on September 21, 2018.
