The cycle begins anew

Sega recently hosted a special event in Toyko to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, which originally launched for the Sega Genesis — or Mega Drive, if you’re nasty — on June 23, 1991.

During the ceremony, Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka confirmed the “completely new” entry in the series his staff are currently working on will be released sometime next year.

While Sega has yet to officially reveal the title, the company has for months been teasing its announcement, which is expected to take place at the Blue Blur’s July 22 anniversary party in San Diego.

The most recent projects to come out of Sonic Team include Sonic Lost World (Wii U, PC, 3DS) and Sonic Runners, an unsuccessful mobile game Sega plans to permanently take offline next month.

Sega has also recently contracted third parties to develop games based on the Sonic Boom television program, the latest of which (Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice) is slated to release this autumn for Nintendo 3DS.
