My brother read The Hunt for Red October in grade four, Lord knows why the school library had a copy. He spent the next few weeks after reading it becoming extra, creepily knowledgeable about nuclear weapons and the lasting impact of Cold War doctrine. I remember, distinctly, the night he explained the concept of M.A.D (that’s mutually assured destruction) in our small, yellow-lit kitchen. How it prevented nuclear war by promising to end every single human life on earth should one ever occur. Except, not really. Because history is full of near-accidental launches, incompetent nuclear handling, rogue generals with bigger hard-ons than brains, and (of course) terrorist plots. With that in mind, the world (even in the early ’90s) could still end in a wash of nuclear fire at any moment.

I would have been in grade three when he explained all of this to me, and it was knowledge that chilled me to the bone then, and probably informed (at least in some way) my worldview for the rest of my life. That is what I credit Tom Clancy with in my life. His decently written paperback thriller introduced me and my brother to nihilistic dread.

Now, his games (that are mostly about shooting people) are on sale on PSN from today till April 11. Some up to 75%, what a bargain!

If you were on the fence about Rainbow 6: Siege (and who could blame you), the standard edition is now available for $38.99 (arguably the price the game should have released at given how filthy it was with micro-transactions). Or you can get caught up on classics like Rainbow 6: Vegas and Ghost Recon for $4.99. You can check out the PlayStation blog for details on all the games and prices available.
