Mafia 3’s Sign of the Times DLC has major True Detective vibes

Something wicked this way comes

The third and final piece of Mafia 3 DLC is out now, some nine months after the base game’s release. It’s called Sign of the Times, and boy does it give off some major True Detective vibes.

Sign of the Times has Lincoln Clay, Father James, and the rest of the New Bordeaux crew dealing with the Ensanglante cult. They’re a twisted lot, holding the city hostage with a string of ritualistic killings and trippy drugs. Lincoln will have to investigate the cult’s ritual sites and work his way towards their backwater base of operations.

I’m a sucker for cult iconography, and it looks like Sign of the Times has that in spades. There are a handful of shots in the trailer that feature macabre totems and spooky-ass masks. Both the imagery and the swamps that mark New Bordeaux’s city limits make for an unsettling environment that capture the best of True Detective‘s first season (shoutouts to season two though, it was excellent, and that’s a hill I’m willing to die on).

In addition to the Ensanglante cult, Sign of the Times also introduces a handful of new weapons and gameplay mechanics. Lincoln will be able to slow down time while in combat, which probably makes killing cultists a bit easier than one might initially assume.
