We are entering a new age of video game plastic this month

Toys to life + rhythm games = no space

Recommended Videos

This month, a ton of plastic shit showed up at my doorstop. Not that I’m complaining, I love this job, but man does it take up a lot of physical space!

To kick things off I’ve been playing Rock Band 4 for roughly a week or so, which brings its own set of two guitars, a mic, and a drum kit. On top of that I reviewed Skylanders: SuperChargers and Disney Infinity 3.0, and I’m in the process of playing LEGO Dimensions, all of which have their own set of toys. Plus, I casually picked up (no waiting in any lines!) this entire wave of amiibo.

Now, I know I don’t need that last bit to do my job necessarily, but still, that’s a lot of plastic in my house as of this month. And let’s not forget that Guitar Hero Live is coming in October, so I’ll need two more guitars for that. For everyone who has kids who want every single toy in a particular line, I feel for you.

As the toys to life market grows, you can probably expect more physical space. I don’t think the plastic instrument revolution will catch on again as it has in the past though, and even then, Harmonix and Activision (ha) have promised to not provide annual releases in favor of years of support for Rock Band and Guitar Hero respectively. But I can already hear the whispers in the wind at Ubisoft HQ for a new Rocksmith…so who knows!
