Telltale’s first original series is a TV show and videogame crossover

Lionsgate is an investor

Telltale Games has a propensity for surprising when it comes to revealing new projects. The news that it was creating a story-based Minecraft was so far out of left field, that it prompted us to wonder aloud what the next Telltale series could possibly be.

Turns out that it won’t be anything we could’ve predicted, because the studio’s making an original series finally. However, this won’t be restricted to a single medium; it’s what Telltale has dubbed a “super show,” a crossover between videogames and television.

While the developer has stayed mum thus far on subject matter for the new project, it’s talked about broad ideas for how the presentation will work. Each episode will contain “Telltale-style” narrative-focused gameplay, alongside set television sequences. But, these won’t feel like two separate halves forming a whole. According to CEO Kevin Bruner, “It’s not an interactive series with a show, or a TV show with a game, but a story integrated in a way that only Telltale can do.”

Accompanying the reveal was the announcement that Lionsgate has made a “significant investment” in Telltale, and that the movie production company’s CEO, Jon Feltheimer, will join Telltale’s board of directors. It remains to be seen what kind of creative input Lionsgate will have over this new series and on future projects.

Telltale added one other notable name to its board of directors today: Unity Technologies CEO (and former EA boss) John Riccitiello. Regarding both Feltheimer and Riccitiello, Bruner commented “This is a time of explosive growth and opportunity for our company, and I’m thrilled to have these industry giants join us as we continue to define exceptional interactive scripted entertainment.”
