Final Fantasy vets, Scottish studio making a RPG

Introducing Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey

Final Fantasy VII writer Kazushige Nojima and composer Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyria Chronicles) have joined forces with French developer Kobojo’s Scottish satellite studio to create Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey, a self-proclaimed Japanese role-playing game.

The project was originally planned with a free-to-play model in mind, but Kobojo CEO Mario Rizzo says that after “listening to the great feedback we received after showing the game at GDC and E3, we’ve made the unprecedented decision to shift gears from Kobojo’s usual free-to-play format to make Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey a premium game for western audiences.”

Zodiac is launching across North America and Europe later this year on iOS devices, with PC and PlayStation ports coming “shortly afterwards.” Though Kobojo says the title will be a “one-time premium game purchase,” the developer wouldn’t provide any pricing information at this time.

The company also points out that post-launch episodic content that will “continue the epic saga of Orcanon” is also in the cards — which could potentially add on to that ‘one-time purchase.’

At any rate, the artwork here looks great (reminiscent of Vanillaware boss George Kamitani’s style) and there are some big names attached to the project, so it might be worth keeping an eye on.
