Dogmeat can’t die in Fallout 4

Every time a non-cartoon animal appears in a videogames these days, there’s always some worry that some sad death awaits it (also, wives). It’s an easy emotional punch and always causes worry when there’s a new trailer for something. The main character will die and respawn at a checkpoint. Countless others will die casually at your hand, who cares? But damn, better not kill that dog.

Fallout 4 isn’t risking this sense of loss, like Fallout 3 did. This time, your canine companion can’t die, Todd Howard just noted.

Maybe Dogmeat ends up being more important than an optional companion this time around.
