Oculus Rift’s recommended specs aren’t as bad as you’d think

They’re not exactly low-level either

What kind of supercomputer is needed to transport a human from their realm of existence to some sort of virtual reality? Probably a ridiculously expensive one, right? Well, not quite. It isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s doable.

Oculus VR has revealed the recommended specs for the retail release of the Rift. They aren’t as high-end as you might expect, but they may require some upgrades, regardless. For the “full Rift experience” as Oculus puts it, you’ll need:

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer

The average price for the GTX 970 looks to be right around $350, making it the most expensive piece for this setup. Using real rough numbers, you could probably buy a rig with this configuration and the Rift for around $1,000. Again, not exactly cheap, but more accessible than you’d think the technology lends itself to.
