Sony devours OnLive

Service demolished, Sony takes on assets

So, who here remembers OnLive, PC gaming’s first large scale solution for streaming hardware intensive games in order to play them on older systems? It feels like an eternity since anybody at all has been talking about it, but apparently it was still chugging along.

According to a report today from VentureBeat, OnLive is finally on its way out, and, interestingly, its assets are all being transferred to Sony’s videogame division. With OnLive out of the picture and their patents being handed over, Sony’s in a pretty good position to establish itself as the biggest name in game streaming.

Sony purchased tech company Gaikai back in 2012 for $380 million in order to develop its videogame streaming solution PlayStation Now. OnLive will run until April 30 with current users not being charged any further fees during the remaining month of service.

So long little OnLive, a great idea that never really caught on.
