It still can’t touch handhelds, though
The Japanese market certainly loves its handheld devices, but for at least one week, a console game is king. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was the top selling title in Japan this week, moving 227,527 units in the first few days since its release. Rounding out the top five were four 3DS games — Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire, Derby Stallion Gold, Aikatsu! 365-Hi no Idol Days, and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.
Predictably, there was a substantial increase in Wii U sales corresponding to the release of Super Smash Bros. The Nintendo console nearly doubled its week-over-week figures with 24,469 units sold. That was good enough for fourth place on the hardware rankings; the New 3DS XL, original 3DS, and New 3DS all beat it out. The next best performing console was the PS4 with 15,971 sales.
Seeing how it’s dominating both the software and hardware charts, it’s a good time to be Nintendo — at least in Japan.
