Fan feedback led to Resident Evil: Revelations HD

Console versions not a result of ‘perceived disappointment’ with 3DS sales

Love or hate Capcom, many vocal fans of the company seem to have an endless supply of opinions regarding why a decision was or was not made. In the case of Resident Evil: Revelations shedding its 3DS exclusivity with ports to consoles and PC, there’s certainly room for speculation. Speaking to Joystiq, producer Tsukasa Takenaka explains how the HD ports came about.

At the time [of development for 3DS] there was no plan for consoles — the console version was only decided after the 3DS launch and after we received fan and critic feedback on the game,” stated Takenaka.

“I don’t think it’s right to say this is anything to do with any perceived disappointment with the performance of the game on the 3DS; quite the opposite,” he said. “We find that the reception from fans and critics was very positive and we were very happy with the sales given the 3DS market at the time of its release. It isn’t anything to do with us trying to salvage any kind of lost opportunity; quite the contrary.”

Good games releasing on more platforms so a larger audience can enjoy them? Why, that sounds pretty wonderful to me. As for this notion of Capcom listening to its fans, I think we can call that, for better or worse, “selective listening.”
