Oculus post Facebook acquisition: ‘We promise we won’t change’

Hopefully the new ownership won’t cause an…oculus RIFT

You know who else promised they wouldn’t change, Oculus? My third husband. But two years after a trip to Nepal and he’s thirty pounds heavier, balding, and a born again Christian. That’s not what I signed up for. No matter your intentions, people change. Especially with two billion dollars.

Anyway, Facebook spent a sickening sum of money (two billion dollars) and purchased Oculus VR. 21-year-old Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey responded to criticism of the deal, saying, “I won’t change, and any change at Oculus will be for the better. We have even more freedom than we had under our investment partners because Facebook is making a long term play on the success of VR, not short-term returns. A lot of people are upset, and I get that. If you feel the same way a year from now, I would be very surprised.”

Luckey insisted that Oculus would operate as transparently as it has been, saying, “We are not going to track you, flash ads at you, or do anything invasive,” and promised you wouldn’t have to log into Facebook when you use the Rift. Oculus now has, “more control of [its] destiny, not less.”

I guess with the bigs entering the VR space in a real way, like Sony’s Project Morpheus, it only makes sense for Oculus to try and expand.
