In a news release that has the Internet shaking, Rockstar Games showed off their …  huh? What? What do mean the other one? Oh, right, okay.

Hrmm, Hrmm … In a news release that has the Internet making a sandwich, THQ announced that the sequel to their surprisingly high selling franchise Saints Row will be arriving on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 next year.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 10, 2007–THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced the next title in the award-winning Saints Row(TM) franchise is currently in development at internal studio Volition, Inc. and is scheduled to ship for the Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system and PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system in 2008. The game will utilize Volition’s proprietary open-world engine and deliver an all-new, cross platform gaming experience.

“The original Saints Row earned critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, unparalleled customization options and the genre’s first-ever online multiplayer,” said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. “The game’s worldwide success shows the growing fanaticism for open-world gaming and our talented team at Volition is now using their proprietary technology to revolutionize the genre yet again.”

Understandably, there may be some 360 fans that have been awaiting a sequel, but alas, the Sony crowd will be introduced to the thuggalicious world of Saints Row without any pretext. According to an article over at NextGeneration, the PS3 version of Saints Row — which is supposed to be out around nowish — has been cancelled due to the fact that the game would “essentially be a port.”

That’s too bad, I guess we’ll just have to find something else to play until Saints Row 2 comes out.
