It took seven hours, but Spelunky has a new world record

‘Oh man, I’m going to feel really bad when I throw this run’

A Plasma Cannon in 1-1. A jetpack in 1-2. This is the start of a remarkably fortunate Spelunky run.

It’s a run that will, at least for the foreseeable future, remain at the top of the leaderboards. Bananasaurus Rex, known as being the first person to complete a solo eggplant run, has set the new world record score: $3,105,850.

This went down live on Twitch earlier today and when I tuned in at around the six-hour mark, he was only just destroying the last remaining bits of the City of Gold. If there’s one word I’d use to describe this playthrough, it’s thorough. The sheer skill of Rex shines through in his calm, collected style of play despite all of the obstacles and pressure he faced. Well done!
