So what’s the deal with the Wii U Virtual Console anyway?

Nintendo speaks

It’s frustrating to see yet another week go by without any sort of announcement in regards to the Wii U eShop — whether it’s new games, or most notably, Virtual Console support.

“Just wait until the US console launch,” fans claimed — yet nothing was revealed. “Just wait until the international console launch,” people said — nothing was announced. After weeks of throwing our hands up and wondering where the Wii U Virtual Console support is, Nintendo finally responded with, something:

We are moving ahead with development of Virtual Console for Wii U, and we plan to make it so you can play it on the Wii U GamePad alone.

It’s easy to see that the Wii U eShop has a lot of potential. Playing classic games on your Wii U GamePad would be a dream. Buying a game on the 3DS eShop and having said games link to your Wii U account would literally eat me out of house and home.

Nintendo seems to have dashed our hopes and dreams of the latter idea by fumbling the way it handles accounts, but there’s still hope yet for a solid Virtual Console infrastructure.

Let’s just say this: if Nintendo announces GameCube VC games, and I’m able to play Super Mario Sunshine solely on the GamePad, you may never see me again. Make it happen, Nintendo, and be more forthright with your development of it.
