Modern-day gaming is nothing without a strong visual design. From simple retro aesthetics, to visuals that push a gaming machine to its limits, we’re treated to a wide range of visuals that evoke any number of feelings.

Even though we’re nearing the ends of the current generation, developers are still finding ways to push the graphical engines on these aging machines. There were a ton of great-looking games this year, and it wasn’t easy narrowing down the list to just five.

As a reminder, here are our nominees for best visuals of 2012:

The Walking Dead
Fez
Borderlands 2
Far Cry 3
Journey

And the winner is …

Journey

Of all the games in 2012, Journey has one of the best visual designs out there. What makes it especially so compelling is the sense of timelessness it gives off. In five, ten, however many years, Journey will always be one of those games that you can look back on fondly and still consider visually pleasing to the eyes.

It’s those visuals that also play an important role in the story developer thatgamecompany set out to present as a reflection on life. The game opens up with a sense of warmth when you begin your quest. As you progress things will get increasingly darker as you learn your culture’s sad history. Eventually you’re thrown into a depressing coldness, causing you to question what went wrong along the way. And just when you think all hope is lost, Journey instills a sense of pure joy that will leave you energized for days to come.
