Crowdfunded attempt to buy Homeworld rights unsuccessful

teamPixel offering refunds to those who participated

THQ’s auction of certain remaining properties took an interesting turn when a group called teamPixel leveraged crowdfunding in an attempt to bid on the rights to Homeworld. In a Kickstarter update this week, the company shared the outcome: “…we were unable to raise the necessary funds to remain competitive against the other parties at the auction.”

Those who contributed to the initiative can track their refund at a website set up specifically for that purpose. For what it’s worth, the developer will move forward with its Homeworld-inspired real-time-strategy game using an original intellectual property.

This was unquestionably an ambitious endeavor and one that I can respect, but perhaps it’s for the best that Team Pixel wasn’t successful; there were too many unknowns for my liking. We’ll have to see who ends up with Homeworld and what their plans are before such a call can be made. teamPixel “anticipates an announcement of the new owner to be made within a couple weeks and for the sale to be finalized around mid-May.”
