Jeff Minter’s next ball tripper simulation is TxK on Vita

I’m getting really hot and thirsty just thinking about it

Lover of goats, llamas, and psychedelic arcade games, Jeff Minter and his development house Llamasoft will continue his legacy with a Vita release called TxK, a sequel to Atari Jaguar classic Tempest 2000.

“We’re going to base it on the essence of the original T2K. It’ll be the pure, straightforward shooter that maybe you hoped for when you first saw Space Giraffe,” Minter wrote on his blog. “We’re not going to overload you with ultra psychedelia, but we will make it fluid and colourful and awesome-looking on the Vita’s delicious, vibrant OLED screen.”

Unlike the original Tempest 2000 sequel, Tempest 3000 on the Nuon (anyone remember that thing?), Minter says he now has the technology to achieve what he wanted to do then. He cites the evolution of his Gridrunner series as an inspiration, stating that the current iOS version is the best one through reiteration.

“To make that I went back to the core design of the game, and made a new version in that same spirit — modern enough to be satisfying to today’s players, but true to the design of the original game,” Minter wrote. And he plans to do the same for Tempest. Let’s hope he can pull it off, because that sounds awesome.

Minter plans to keep a development blog on his site, so stay tuned for updates.
