Resident Evil Veronica’s surprise reveal is one of my favorite moments from this past week’s Summer Game Fest, but I’m already more excited about it today.
Resident Evil series producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi spoke to the media at Summer Game Fest this past weekend and confirmed a number of new details about the game, as reported by Eurogamer. That first detail being Hirabayashi himself as one of the leads on the project is big news because his previous work includes the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes.
The leadership team is also comprised of directors Kazunori Kadoi and Yasuhiro Ampo, who previously tag-team directed the RE2 and RE4 remakes. For my money, and many others’, those games stand out as two of the best overall titles in the franchise, period. They both expertly recreated the events of the originals, while modernizing them and adding twists to the formula. I’d expect Veronica to follow suit.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica first launched in 2000 and definitely could use some tweaks to its pacing, storyline, and characters like Steve Burnside and the Ashford twins. This remake gives Capcom the opportunity to do something similar to how it brought forward other characters, like RE2’s ancillary cast members, like Annette Birkin or RE4’s like Jack Krauser. I’m excited to see how they’re handled.
Like the original, though, Hirabayashi said that Veronica is primarily Claire Redfield’s story, although her brother Chris also plays a large role, alongside Albert Wesker and the Ashfords. The game is also confirmed to be a third-person title, like RE2 and RE4 before it, and first-person is not an option like in Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village, and this year’s Resident Evil Requiem.
Most excitingly for me, though, Hirabayashi says the game will play more similarly to RE2 than RE4, which sounds excellent in the sense that the latter was more action-oriented, so Veronica could have more of that classic survival horror feel I long for.
Resident Evil Veronica is sure to be one of my most anticipated games for all of 2027, and I can’t wait to hear and see more about it.
