Skyrim PC patch exists to lock game into Steam

Hide your kids and bar your doors, because the PC gamers are on the streets and they’re mad again! Bethesda has finally issued a patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and it’s not fixing anything. Instead, some argue it’s worsening the game by tying it eternally to Steam.

The game could originally be run without Steam, but the mysterious 18MB patch was discovered to put a stop to this.

The biggest problem users have is that it undoes the “large address aware” unofficial patch that allowed Skyrim to use more memory and support more modifications. There’s already a new LAA version that sidesteps this problem, but users are still annoyed that their first patch is basically a lockdown.

Bethesda has said that the first real patch for Skyrim should arrive the week after Thanksgiving, so be on the lookout then.
