Square Enix keeping its next-gen Luminous Studio in-house

Engine won’t be built around a licensing model

Back at E3, Square Enix showed an impressive real-time tech demonstration of its next-generation engine, Luminous Studio. You’ll likely remember this demo as “Agni’s Philosphy,” the one with the magic and AK-47s. Yeah. It looked terrific visually, anyway.

Speaking to Shacknews, Square Enix CEO Mike Fischer has stated that Luminous Studio “is an in-house tool. We’re not building this around a licensing model.” One can only imagine what developers could do with it under such a model, but that’s where Unreal Engine 4 and others will happily offer their services.

According to Shacknews, studios who sign publishing deals with Square Enix will receive access to the tech, and since the company has really stepped up as a publisher these past few years, that could be a very good thing for gamers. “It’s my hope that this makes teams and creative people around the world excited to work for us because they’ll get their hands on some of the best technology in the industry,” said Fischer.
