WTF: Nintendo patents Massively Single Player game

Recommended Videos

Nintendo. You. YOU.

Nintendo filed a patent back in 2010, and it was just published last week. It was for Massively Single-Player Online Game. Read that again: a Massively Single-Player Online Game.

Mind blown? Imagine a single-player game in which the player’s actions change the world and other players playing the same single-player game. You’d get the benefit of an online world without all the pesky people running around. In an example Nintendo says that one player could find a pile of building materials and would build a house. The next player would not find those materials, but a finished house.

Yeah, I’m making the same face you are.

The patent sells it with some sass: “Those who want to play games that are more dynamic, not-based on Al and not-pre-scripted like multiplayer games, however, don’t want to ‘deal’ with other people, appreciate the privacy it provides.”

In other words, screw direct interaction.

According to Gamespot UK the crazy continues in this filing as it refers to an implementation of this MSPOG (haha!) idea on “a home video game system such as the Nintendo Wii 3D video game system, a Nintendo DS or other 3D capable interactive computer graphics display systems.”
