PAX: New Razer Blade hands-on gallery and impressions

Recommended Videos

I managed to get my hands on the new Razer Blade gaming laptop after the announcement yesterday during PAX 2012. I wanted to steal one, but there were only two, and its creators were hovering over both of them.

The Razer is slick and feels really good in the hands. The build is all metal, sleek, and well-balanced, weighing in at only 6.6 lbs. Really, every single inch of this machine screams quality.

I really dug the Switchblade UI hybrid display/touchpad and how it could instantly change functions. As you’ll see from the gallery below, it jumps from daily use (Gmail, browser, etc.) to app-specific functions that fill in the user-assignable keys. You can even watch YouTube videos or browse the web on the little screen, freeing up the main screen for gaming. What’s neat is that this UI changes automatically with selected applications.

We did not get a chance to game on the new Razer, but we will soon. We’ll report back shortly.

If you want a premium, portable gaming machine, the Razer would definitely fit the bill. Now that Apple has discontinued the 17-inch MacBook Pro, this is the biggest of the premium laptops out there.

Still, $2,500 is a lot of money. That same amount could buy you every game console and portable, a decent desktop gaming rig, and still have some left over for games.
