Ribbontail god rolls and how to get them in Destiny 2

A trace rifle can seem like an odd choice, but it's not bad.

The Hand Cannon Arms Week brought Ribbontail, an unexpected Strand trace rifle that, as you can imagine, isn’t the featured archetype. But this weapon can still fill a good role, especially with a god roll.

Ribbontail isn’t better than Sundered Doctrine’s Unsworn, which has better rolls and stats. But if you don’t have access to The Final Shape‘s last dungeon, you can snag this one during the event. Here are the Ribbontail god rolls we’re chasing during Arms Week. Since this weapon is better for PvE, though, we won’t cover the Crucible side of it.

  • Barrel: Corkscrew Rifling, Fluted Barrel, or Smallbore
  • Mag: Light Battery or Tactical Battery
  • First perk: Subsistence
  • Second perk: Detonator Beam, Killing Tally, or Redirection
  • Honorable mention: Binary Orbit
  • Alternative: Threat Detector or Proximity Power paired with Surrounded

Ribbontail (and most other trace rifles) are more suited for add-clear than for high damage numbers, so you’re bound to use them for taking down weaker enemies. That’s why we went with damage-boosting perks like Killing Tally, Detonator Beam, and Redirection, with an honorable mention to Binary Orbit. These will also give you an extra chunk of damage if you’re using them against something sturdier, and Detonator Beam doesn’t have any trigger other than dealing sustained damage. Redirection in particular helps you deal more damage to yellow-bar enemies, which can come in handy. You gather stacks of it extremely quickly because of how trace rifles work, so it may be worth keeping a roll of it in your pocket.

Our choices pair perfectly with Subsistence on column three, which is our top pick in our god roll. Killing Tally’s buff goes away when reloading, so Subsistence gives you a little more breathing room there. Reloading can eat up Binary Orbit’s damage buff, and since Redirection and Detonator Beam activate on damage, having more ammo in your magazine lets them activate more often.

You can also go for Wellspring for general ability regen (if it works) or Envious Arsenal if you want to use it on damage rotations, but Subsistence is probably the better option for general use.

If you’re fighting more at melee range—say you’re a Consecration Titan or using Phoneutria Fera—you’ll also benefit from Surrounded in the fourth column, which works well with Threat Detector or Proximity Power.

At first, this new trace rifle is available from the Hand Cannon Arms Week event, dropping alongside Phoneutria Fera, the new Spread Shot archetype. You can buy Engrams from Ada-1 in the Shooting Range for Combat Telemetry, awarded when completing activities with a hand cannon equipped. Decode them through Ada for higher-tier drops if you have more currency, or open them with Rahool at the Tower for free tier ones. The process of obtaining this trace rifle after the event ends is still unclear, though Bungie might bring it through vendors like Banshee-44 and Xûr.
