One of the bigger surprises this E3 is the new Tarantino take on the beloved Brothers in Arms franchse. Why did Gearbox break with the realistic tactical shooter format we loved? Apparently, it’s in order to take “a new approach to the World War II setting by bringing an even more intense and action-oriented experience to franchise fans and shooters-enthusiasts alike.”
Translation: “Because we thought it would make for an awesome four-player co-op game.” Or perhaps the last BiA title just didn’t sell that well. The WWII genre did grow stale years ago, but I’m sure there are also plenty of marketing reasons behind calling this a Brothers in Arms game when it doesn’t look like one at all.
Furious 4 will let you select a “fighting style,” and players will be able to increase the power of the characters’ weapons and abilities by unlocking things like challenges, ranks, and other awards through a “Player Growth” system. Before you start thinking that it will be a multiplayer-only game, there will be a campaign mode although it’s co-op oriented.
Multiplayer details are yet to be announced, but there will be at least 6 different modes for up to 10 players. Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 will hit in the first half of 2012 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
