Units form the backbone of any drafted deck in Monster Train 2, so it’s critical to use the best ones possible to increase your chances of success.
Units represent the foot soldiers that work around your Champion, and their main task is to defeat the enemies by eliminating them. When built right, any unit will work well, but some of them are just better than others.
Best units to use in Monster Train 2
I have tried to feature the top two units from every clan available in the game. Of course, it’s not certain that you’ll be able to draft them on a specific run, but make sure to choose the following names if they appear.

| Unit | Clan | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Avenger | Banished | This is one of the best units to use as part of the Banished clan. A 2-cost 2-space unit, the Avenger applies Melee Weakness for one turn on an enemy whenever it’s hit. The enemy takes extra damage from Melee attacks in the next turn, which fits perfectly with almost any clan unit. |
| Swordmaiden | Banished | I run a lot of equipment with Banished units, and Swordmaiden is the perfect card to add. When you summon her for the first time, she will draw a random equipment card from your deck. Whenever you apply equipment to your allies, Swordmaiden will gain 8 Valor, which transforms her attack, and she will also gain armor if she is in the front. |
| Greed Dragon | Pyreborne | If you’re okay to hoard as many Dragon Eggs as possible, Greed Dragon is the perfect unit to add to your deck. It will receive a +10 buff to attack and health for every Dragon Egg in your inventory. Try to increase your room size with a suitable Artifact, as this creature requires three spaces, but it can do the job of multiple units on its own. |
| Goldtooth | Pyreborne | There are multiple ways to earn Gold with Banished and Pyreborne units, and Goldtooth makes it easier. You’ll gain 5 Gold every time Goldtooth deals unblocked damage. The card also gets +15 Strike for every 100 Gold at the start of your turn. |
| Moonguard | Luna Coven | This should be the first card for you to pick if Luna Coven is your primary clan. His power scales up with the amount of Magic Power applicable on a floor. Make sure to combine with a unit that has Conduit applicable on it, as it will help you scale up Moonguard’s attack to dangerous levels. He obtains a +2 Strike per Magic Power on a floor. |
| Shadeguard | Luna Coven | Luna Coven is more about spells, but Shadeguard is pretty useful. It will keep gaining +10 Strike and +15 Heart at the end of a turn if New Moon is active. |
| Spore Launcher | Underlegion | This unit applies 2 Decay every time you play a card on its floor. An enemy unit will take three damage at the end of the turn per stack of Decay, so your focus should be on applying as much Decay as possible. |
| Squad Leader | Underlegion | This is an excellent card to empower your Funguys, as it will add Strike to all your troop units. |
| Meathook | Lazarus League | This is one of my favorite units from the Lazarus League. This 1-cost card has 25 Strike and 15 Health, and offers the Hookhand Ability. This ability can daze any enemy for one turn, including Bosses. You can always upgrade it further to make it more powerful. |
| Sanguine Assistant | Lazarus League | This 1-cost unit has little defense, but offers Lifesteal. Additionally, it creates the Vampire’s Tooth equipment on death that adds Strike and Lifesteal to the applied units. |
It’s important to upgrade every unit as much as possible. All units can be applied two upgrades, which will add their damage potential, impart new in-game effects, or raise their health. You’ll need Gold and Merchants for this, so plan accordingly.
