XCOM reboot invades consoles and PC on March 6, 2012

[Update: Added the E3 trailer for the game above.]

2K Games has broken the silence on its XCOM re-boot, giving it a March 6, 2012 release date for North America. The game, which is hitting PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, will be released March 9 internationally.

2K is quick to call it an “intense sci-fi thriller,” but never mentioning the term “first-person shooter” in its press release. What I saw last year at E3 was certainly, on the surface, a first-person shooter. It seemed to stray wildly from what people expect from XCOM, despite a number of nods and references.

We’ll get an updated look at XCOM next week at E3, so stay tuned for more.
