THQ and Random House Publishing Group have announced a joint team to create and develop “original” IPs across multiple media. This team expects the new IP to appear as a “collection of games and books” first, while they develop a “rich IP universe” for other media.
It fits into THQ’s transmedia strategy, through which it wants to expand the universe of its core games across books, TV series and (TV-)movies to strengthen the brands. In a nutshell, they want to use each medium’s specific strengths to expand upon an IP’s narrative.
While there is nothing wrong with transmedia approaches, THQ needs to pick up the Stargate license already — a perfect transmedia opportunity if there ever was one. That, and announce 50 Cent: Even More Blood In The Sand with 4-player online co-op, a Gangsta vs. Bustas Horde mode, a Blood In The Sand movie, and a novel.
