The Marvel Super Heroes set in Magic The Gathering (aka MTG) has over 350 different Commanders to pick from, and there are wonderful options to choose from. These cards can become the founding pillars of your deck and help defeat opponents easily.

Let’s look at what I consider the five best choices among all available options in the current meta.

Mister Fantastic

The Fantastic Four precon deck comes with four commanders, and all four of them are viable. Mister Fantastic, however, stands out from the rest of the lot due to its in-game ability. The three-cost card offers Vigilance and Reach, and allows you to draw a card if you cast a noncreature spell.

You can further use its second ability to get a powerful copying effect that allows you to use another ability twice. You can use them on new targets, making it a great choice to wipe the board.

Captain America, Team Leader

I love to use decks that allow you to boost cards. Captain America, Team Leader boosts a hero card by +1/+1 whenever it enters the battle. However, it also boosts self by +1/+1 from the same ability. While the usability of this deck is slightly niche, you can go tall to gain an advantage over the opponents. This is an ideal Commander card for all hero-type decks.

The Scarlet Witch

A powerful three-cost Commander, The Scarlet Witch can reduce the cost of all Instant and Sorcery spells that require four or more mana. The reduced cost depends on The Scarlet Witch’s power, which can ramp up if you can combine the card with other cards. Once ramped up, you can create overpowered chains by playing two/three high-cost spell cards in a single turn.

Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk

The dual-setup Commander card can create infinite combos. Bruce Banner allows you to draw as many cards as you want. Once you transform into The Incredible Hunk, he becomes 8/8 while gaining Reach, Trample, and Enrage. The Enrage ability gives you +1/+1 whenver it takes damage. He also gets an additional combat phase after he gets tapped.

With Caltrops, you can create an infinite loop of power-ups. Another great combination is Limit Break, which doubles his power and toughness for one turn.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

If there was a perfect card to pick from this set, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl takes the spot. You create a 1/1 token when she enters the field, and the process repeats whenever she attacks. This fits nicely with her mono-green deck archetype, which will offer you plenty of ways to create and ramp up the tokens.

With some additional support, you can have a board full of 1/1 Squirrel tokens and scale them up to wipe the board. When used correctly, this ability feels almost broken in the current meta.
