Darkspore's Zrin the Sun Fist is a tank

There's really no better way to describe him. He's big, deals a lot of close-quarters damage and is the primary subject of this new Darkspore video. Listen, if you dare, to some very dry narration of his assorted powers...

Hands-on and interview with Darkspore

While Ben Perlee was busy writing words about Darkspore, I've been hustling up this video for you. Oh Ben, you and your written word. So old fashioned. I didn't get into Darkspore with the same level of depth that Ben did, b...

Hands-on: Darkspore PvP photo
Hands-on: Darkspore PvP
by Ben Perlee

When EA announced Darkspore earlier this summer, the fusion between Spore's character customization and a Diablo-esque RPG set in space makes for an interesting set-up. Last night, we had the chance to see how the game's PvP elements are coming together, and while Diablo and Torchlight clearly have inspired the game, there's enough here that makes the multiplayer unique and worth playing.

Follow the jump for more.

[And after you do, be sure to check out Jonathan Holmes interview with Darkspore's Creative Director, Mike Perry. You'll love it, I swear!]

New Darkspore gameplay trailer

I increasingly get the impression that you lot don't care about Darkspore. And it's hard to blame you for that. I had grave doubts about it when I saw the game earlier this year, but I came away impressed that Maxis was atte...

The creation of a Living Weapon in Darkspore

Here's a little tease for Maxis Studios' recently announced Darkspore. It's a rendered cinematic showing the process used by the Crogenitors to create one of their Living Weapons. It doesn't actually tell you anything about ...

The basis for much of my opinion on Spore comes, unfortunately, from its spin-off games for consoles and handhelds. While the original title was something which captured my interest, my inability to commit to a life of PC gaming by upgrading this ancient computer prevented me from actually playing it. I'd like to do that someday because I want to know for myself if this is a series that can justify the marketing push which has foisted so many mediocre or worse titles on an unsuspecting public.

I mention this because I want you to have some background for the scene I'm about to set. I'm in San Francisco, visiting Maxis Studios and wondering why I'm there. The thought had crossed my mind that this would relate to Spore. Would have been impossible for it not to, but I wanted to believe that they were moving on to bigger and better things. I wanted them to be as embarrassed as I was for them. I'd forgotten about the trademark, a portent I was soon to be reminded of. My initial reaction upon seeing the title of the game I was about to see, Darkspore, was one of gut-wrenching fear.

It pleases me to say that my sense of alarm wasn't necessary. Darkspore moves the franchise in a very different direction while taking some of the most compelling aspects of Spore along for the ride.

Comic-Con schedule leaks Spore role-playing game photo
Comic-Con schedule leaks Spore role-playing game
by Matthew Razak

We all know that Activision is the bad guy now and Electronic Arts is all awesome and cool these days, but that doesn't mean that it won't be whoring out a popular franchise as much as it can. Never doubt that EA is a business, and its next move in franchise spreading is evidently going to be an RPG based in the Spore universe.

The reveal slipped out via Comic-Con's show schedule where this description popped up:

6:00-7:00 Video Game Reveal: Maxis Studio— Maxis Studio (The Sims and Spore video games) has just announced their next project, a brand new, Sci-Fi Action-RPG based on the DNA of Spore. Join key leads from the dev team, Thomas VuPaul Sottosanti and Lauren McHugh, for the first game reveal to the public! Room 3

Now don't get me wrong; as long as this is a good game that actually has something to do with Spore, the Spore name can be smeared all over it like cream cheese on a bagel. In fact I'm kind of hoping that this is the hinted at Darkspore. We will find out more soon as Comic-Con approaches quickly and Dtoid will be there.

An animated Spore movie is finally happening photo
An animated Spore movie is finally happening
by Jordan Devore

For once, we are getting a videogame-based movie that actually makes a lot of sense. As reported by Variety, Fox has acquired the rights from EA to produce a Spore movie, and while few specifics are known about the film at this time, there are some names attached to the project.

"From every perspective -- visually, thematically and comedically -- the world of Spore provides the potential to put something truly original on the screen," says director Chris Wedge. Having previously directed Ice Age, I think he's a suitable candidate for the gig, although he's no Uwe Boll.

The movie is set to be produced by Blue Sky Studios, while EA Entertainment's Patrick O'Brien and Maxis Studio's Lucy Bradshaw will both serve as executive producers. Finally, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland (The Princess and the Frog) will be writing the script for Spore.

Out of all of the films based on EA properties that are in the works -- The Sims, Army of Two, Dante's Inferno, Dead Space, Mass Effect, and probably something else I'm forgetting -- I believe this one seems like it has the most potential to be successful with its target audience.
