PS3 online details have arrived

5:13 PM on 10.15.2006   |   Brad Rice

PS3 Fanboy made a nice little summary of an article over at Eurogamer, summarizing details about the PS3's online capabilities. I must say, it's what I was hoping for, and I'm truly excited for it. Some of the notables include free online play, periodically updating OS, a fully functioning web browser, and plenty of online content. I never liked Xbox Live, because they charged you in order to play games online. That's bull, in my opinion. Luckily, Sony isn't going that route and is offering a lot more content for us all for no cost. If you played on Xbox Live for the life of the system, you'd be shelling out an additional $250 for the console. Putting it at ... $650. Not so cheap now compared to the PS3, eh? Check out a rehash of some of the more important points that PS3 Fanboy listed after the jump. [Thanks to Mike Yagi for sending this in!]
  • PS3 has a fully upgradeable OS, with periodic updates like the PSP.
  • "The PS3 will support multiple user profiles on the console - so when you turn it on, you select your own profile, and you're instantly logged into your own PlayStation Network account as well as activating all your own settings for the system. If you share a console with multiple different people, or if friends come around to play often, this is an incredibly useful feature."
  • Complete web browser! You can even use bookmarks and such. Lets see how many hits dtoid will get from the PS3.
  • There is a Master Account and an Associated Account -- Masters can limit the other accounts to the amount of time in the Playstation Store, among other things, probably.
  • Online play and everything will be free. The only thing you are going to pay for is content that is being sold in the Playstation Store or subscription fees for MMOs.
  • Texting is easy and more intuitive than the on-screen keyboard other services may use (like the original Phantasy Star Online for DC). The PS3 will also support video and voice chat.
  • The PS3 will give you notifications in game when something goes on with your buddy list, like friends' status changing. We've yet to see what these notifications will look like. Hopefully they won't be overly obnoxious, like maybe just a line of dialogue in game or something.
  • The store doesn't use a points system, rather it deals in local currencies.
  • There will also be homebrew titles to check out and download, such as fl0w. You'll also be able to download any "classic" PSX and PS2 titles you may have missed out on... as well as some PSP games.
