Review: The Rhythm of Fighters

Over the past few decades, SNK has created a vast stable of memorable characters and franchises. I remember going into an arcade as a child for the first time and spending $10 on Fatal Fury, finding the fighters there more appealing in many ways than Capcom's Street Fighter cast.

SNK has melded these characters into just about every genre imaginable, from beat-'em-ups to shoot-'em-ups (King of Fighters Sky Stage rocks by the way), and now, they're pushing out a rhythm game. Despite the fact that it doesn't defy genre conventions in the slightest, that reliable stable of IPs works strongly in SNK's favor yet again.

E3's Senran Kagura showcase is both titillating and ridiculous

As Miku fans likely already know, Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd is coming to North America this year, to both PS3 and Vita. It was through your support for the first title that this sequel's release is possible, Sega tells Destructoid. That strong support also made it so that Sega will be bringing physical releases for both versions. That's great news for fellow Vita fans.

I spent a little bit of time with DIVA F 2nd. As you know, the gameplay is pretty close to that of the first game. But they've made a few changes and improvements to that gameplay. In playing through "The World is Mine," "Decorator," and "Doppelgänger," I had to get used to the stick flicking and linked stars (tracing shapes with analog sticks), but those are fun after you get them down. I liked being able to tweak the difficulty settings even further with items, especially on stages I sucked on. Even Normal setting is pretty challenging at first.

There will be 40 songs in this release, some of which have only been available in Japan until now. Old ones were upgraded to HD, too. Some of the videos for these stages were crazy busy, but that's how I like it.

No surprises here, though. Series fans know what they're getting. Stay tuned for more news on DIVA F 2nd's release.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call has added the option to use buttons instead of the stylus. Game producer Ichiro Hazama told us in an interview at E3 today that he was thinking that fans that play 3DS while laying in bed might enjoy this alternative control method. I told him that I think I might be better at it than the stylus method.

Harmonix announces Dance Central Spotlight, a digital-only Xbox One exclusive

Dance Central Spotlight is a new Xbox One Kinect dancing title. The idea is to keep the focus on dancing and music, serving as a sort of follow-up to the hit Xbox 360 title Dance Central.

The difference here is that Spotlight is a smaller package, coming with only 10 songs, and released as a download-only title. Harmonix plans to launch with a DLC library of at least 50 tracks, and says that they'll follow with weekly DLC for a time after that. They have improved their authoring pipeline, letting them create song content more quickly.

You'll get more out of each song now, too. With Kinect 2.0's improved skeleton tracking, they can do more with each song. So now, instead of three routines, you'll get eight: four core (easy to difficult) routines, strength and training routines, and finally both easy and difficult choreography routines.

And here's some great news: Legacy DLC will be supported. If you've ever purchased DLC for Dance Central, you'll get the Spotlight version for free when it is released, complete with the 8 routines.

Harmonix has thought a lot about how they'll welcome players to Fantasia: Music Evolved and they've decided to add a partner apprentice that will serve as a sort of game guide. Her name is Scout, a talented but impatient apprentice that works alongside the player to fight the force called the Noise.

Scout is fully voiced and animated, and appears as the game begins to help kick off the story. She seems to have a lively personality, wearing a star-covered ball cap and street clothes. Players will cooperate with Scout to save Fantasia.

With a new Amplitude on the horizon and a post-Guitar Hero world having left much to be desired by way of rhythm games, we must look to the past to drink our fill from the fount of the world of music. And even before Guitar Hero spoon-fed the bitter taste of recording artists' dignity to the videogame-playing masses (have you heard Band Hero’s reworking of Filter’s “Take A Picture?”), rhythm and music game aficionados had it way better.

The future is always promising, but if you backed the Amplitude Kickstarter because you felt starved for a musical revolution, take a trip down memory lane with these greats. Now, now -- if your favorite isn't on this list, I might just revisit the idea later. You never know.
