Super Smash Bros. for Wii U contains a ton of unused data

Some people make it a hobby to find out everything they can about a game, inside and out, and these data miners have been poring over the code of Super Smash Bros. since release. Over the last couple of months, bits an...

Outfit swap DLC for Smash Bros. would make a lot of money

[Image by Pitarou] The amiibo craze doesn't seem to have died down yet. My guess is that once Nintendo has released 50 different figures, amiibo fans will start to look at all the fun-but-relatively-worthless figures they've ...

PSA: Today is the last day to register for the free Super Smash Bros. soundtracks

If you are anything like me, you put off registering products on Club Nintendo until months (or years) later, when they aren't worth as much. If you bought both the 3DS and the Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. and you have...

The official Wii U GameCube adapter is still crazy stupid to find, here's a third-party one

In recent news, Nintendo sold the Wii U GameCube adapter on its site, making good on the promise that it would come back into stock -- sorta. It sold out in roughly 30 minutes, so I hope you were staring at the internet at th...

My daughter could probably beat you at Mario Kart 8

Last month, my family and I were at our local mall doing some holiday shopping. As we were walking through the mall, we noticed a large gathering of people who were playing video games. Upon closer inspection, it turns out th...

Little Mac got some air game with 'crazy aerial death combo'

Little Mac must've found some Air Jordans so he could be Like Mike because someone found him some air game like he put his hand on the basketball from Space Jam and stole Starscream's powers. Maybe those Reebok Pum...

If you hate the Pac-Land stage in Smash Bros., maybe this mini-game will make it better

Pac-Land is considered a hallmark title for being one of the first games to use and help popularize parallax scrolling. Despite its contribution to modern gaming, Super Smash Bros.' homage to it isn't all that well-rece...

Wii U modder shows off Game & Watch amiibo creation process photo
Wii U modder shows off Game & Watch amiibo creation process
by Chris Carter

Mema Haxx is at it again! After showing off the creation of the unannounced Duck Hunt amiibo in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, there were some doubts as to the authenticity of the video.

Now he's released another demo, this time showing the entire amiibo creation process from start to finish with Game & Watch -- another amiibo that hasn't even been confirmed yet. It seems as if he was able to modify data to create a fake NFC instance, and stumbled upon unreleased characters.

The 'Pac-Man pair' attempts to break Smash Bros. doubles photo
The 'Pac-Man pair' attempts to break Smash Bros. doubles
by Jonathan Holmes

The honeymoon period for Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and the Wii U is just about over. Some of the people who said a month ago that it's the best game ever made are now starting to come out with emotionally charged complaints, like the roster isn't as good as Project M or Brawl, that it's a pain to unlock all of the custom moves, that the single player component is lacking, and other niggling gripes.

My thought is that if there is ever a completely perfect Smash Bros. game, then we'll just have less to look forward to in the inevitable follow up. I love the new Smash, I'm already excited about the next one, which I expect to see in stores sometime in 2021. Hopefully we won't have to wait that long for Nintendo to patch out this exploit for doubles Pac-Man players, allowing them to use their Up-B to go so far off screen that they can't be hit by most characters. Ness, Pit, and Mega an could probably tag them with projectiles, and Shulk, Kirby, or Villager might be able to soar high enough to knock their blocks off, but even then, what a pain in the neck!

While this trick may not be as unstoppable as it looks, it's still a bummer to see these kinds of cheap (but admittedly funny) tactics make their way into the latest Smash. I'll be awfully sad if this brand of Pac-Man doubles play starts to flood online For Glory battles. That said, if you're looking for an easy wins in doubles Classic, Master Orders, or Crazy Orders modes, this may be a skill-free way to get ahead.

Duck Hunt amiibo files allegedly found on-disc for Smash Wii U

It makes perfect sense that Nintendo would have every amiibo file already on the Super Smash Bros. Wii U disc, but this video apparently confirms that fact. Taken by YouTube user Mema Haxx, it shows the character (known...

Tiiiimberrrr! Falling trees will be the death of you in Smash Bros.

At this weekend's Shockwave 11 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament, player Lord Cat God found out the hard way that the Villager's tree isn't necessarily loyal to whoever created it. The result was a room full of suddenly boisterous people, and one of the more memorable and unexpected victories for opponent, Awestin.

The most disrespectful push-ups in videogames photo
The most disrespectful push-ups in videogames
by Jonathan Holmes

Like I was saying to the creators of Pocket Rumble, the minutia is what will make or break a fighting game. All the little moment-to-moment experiences in a given round of combat have to come together to create a vast psychological landscape. That big picture is easy to take for granted unless you take the time to pick it apart now and again.

For instance, winning or losing a fight doesn't have to be about how the game defines victory. The player can define victory on their own terms if they choose to. Using the old Dan/Servbot/Amingo team in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and knocking just one of the opponent's characters out of the match is the peak of competitive fighting game majesty for some. For others, taking on all comers with Pichu and surviving a three-minute battle in Super Smash Bros. Melee is the zenith of videogame achievement. Setting a goal and reaching it. That's what winning is all about, regardless of how the game or anyone else judges you.

Maybe the Wii Fit Trainer's unorthodox crawl animation in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U will become the next great disrespectful fighting game handicap. Doing a quick set of push-ups while in the middle of a super-powered combat scenario really sends a message. It's a message about priorities, about how seriously you take your opponent, and the importance of doing whatever the heck you want. It's beautiful. So beautiful that I had to write a song about it.

Thanks Leonard Nimoy!
