Video impressions: Uncharted 4's extended E3 demo

Sneaky sneak
Jun 22
// Steven Hansen
I got to see another large chunk of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End from after the trailer cut off at E3. I wrote about that a bit here. I've also written a bit about why I think Uncharted 4 has the potential to be much better than Uncharted 3's poor showing. Anyways, if you want to see the video we shot in conjunction where I crouch in some bushes as teens do skate tricks nearby, here's that.

Elena is real mad at Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Jun 16 // Steven Hansen
[embed]294098:59077:0[/embed] At the end of this, Drake goes crashing through the wooden plank, skips across the water, and ends up getting dragged through the mud on the other side. All the while he's shooting with one hand, hanging on for dear life with the other, because he is very strong. It's not quite just a set piece set up as that grappling hook is a huge part of Uncharted 4's gameplay systems and you'll always be able to shoot from it. Drake pulls himself up onto the crane truck that'd been dragging him and so begins a long series of shooting with assumed bad guys on motor bikes as Drake tries to work is way to the front of the convoy chasing his brother, Sam. After hijacking a jeep and catching up, the two argue over who should jump to the other's vehicle. A little brotherly conflict. Then Nate gets blindsided by a truck and there's a nice, quieter moment of being pinned underneath a flipped over van that is increasingly on fire. Nate hops on Sam's bike and that armored truck returns with a vengeance in a Sonic Adventure 2 style chase sequence towards the camera. Eventually, of course, they escape. This is when we got wind of some story elements. Sully, Sam, and Nate are after collected treasure from a pirate commune, Libertalia. Someone named Rafe, presumably from Days of Our Lives, is trying to kill them. They chat up plans on the way into their motel and suddenly there's Nate, rarely tongue tied, as a very upset Elena is standing in the room. She hints that Nate was lying about being on a job in Malaysia and, as you can see above, she is pretty damn pissed off. It ain't anger, it's that, "I'm so hurt and disappointed in you" look that just cuts deep. Nate fucked up. We'll know how bad next year.

What recent games have actually had good box art?

Jun 03 // Steven Hansen
The Gravity Daze box art was supremely my shit (it's slightly better than the American Gravity Rush one). That full piece of artwork is one of many Gravity Rush pieces that long served as a desktop wallpaper for me. It's still my Vita lock screen. It sells the world instantly. "Gravity" in the title? Beautiful city and lead not adhering to gravity? I'm interested. Of course that box art gets to take full advantage of pulling from one of the most beautiful games ever made. Like the ICO box, it's just a great piece of art, used on the box. Hey, good thing I made 2011 an arbitrary cut off, right? Maybe I can sneak Rayman Origins in here, too. I think I just like how pink Catherine is. Aggressively. It might be the hottest pink thing I own (I have pink shirts and things, mostly pale, though). Especially given how dark the story gets. It subverts the idea of naive femininity the same way both characters (bubbly, but dangerous; serious, but pink-loving) do. Holy shit yes. It is basically a war crime that this isn't a box I own in my home. I either have to A) import the Japanese boxed copy or B) just get this as a giant poster, sans logos. Actually, let's just go with B. How the hell do I make that happen. -- All right. I've already had to dip into non-North American cover art. Help me out. Which games have done it right recently? What stands out on shelves full of thousand yard staring main characters and inscrutable action?

Uncharted is uninspired

Japan gets Uncharted 4: The Pirate King and the Last Treasure

Same game, different subtitle

We're getting Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (delayed into 2016). Dark. Foreboding. Japan is getting Uncharted 4: The Pirate King and the Last Treasure, which sounds like it could be a Netflix-funded Goonies reboot. Or, you know, One Piece. Maybe Sony should go with Uncharted 4: The Hunger Games in the States?  Goes both ways, though. The States gets Angry Kirby. [via reddit]

Uncharted 4 trailer analysis: Hints at improvements over Uncharted 3

Dec 08 // Steven Hansen
[embed]284668:56563:0[/embed] Skip to about seven minutes into the above trailer to get past all the Uncharted set dressing.  Uncharted 3's biggest fault is that you can see its seams. You can tell that you're engaged in wave-based gunplay segments, or that you're in a stealth segment. The former took over too much of the game, turning it into a cover-based shooting gallery that doesn't encourage any of the movement and locomotion it obviously reserved for delineated platforming segments. Mowing down a lot of folks from up on high behind a wall is a lot less fun that running at them, hip firing, and finishing them off with a punch in the face. So the seven-minute mark here puts us in an "enemy" segment compared to the previous feeling of safety, but without immediately starting combat, and without sacrificing movement. Drake's still sneaking around, enemies abound. And getting a gun at eight minutes doesn't mean "hell fire time" until you're spotted. Then there's familiar gunplay, Naughty Dog showing off its Wet Drake water physics, and all that.  Hop to 10:30. Organic stealth. No cover, or UI element explaining. The enemy just doesn't see you in the brush. The same happens after the mud bath at 11:40. There is enough openness for you to naturally disappear as you watch enemies flit about in search of you. And then? 13:30? You can just leave without killing everyone. It's a far cry from the meat grinder that was Uncharted 3. It's open, with enemies all around so that you're always at risk (of being spotted while unnoticed, of being under fire while engaged), but they don't file in in waves by the dozen while you wait to clear them out. Advancing feels more like the goal than killing does, even if there is plenty of killing.  This is a manicured, directed piece of gameplay, but it's not heavily cut or edited and does imply that this style if play will be possible. It feels more natural than Uncharted 3, which was very obviously built around stitched together set pieces. This one could still be, too, of course. Still, if you dig Drake's handsome quipping and the pulp fiction adventuring, which I mostly do, this trailer hints at a much better time than I had with Uncharted 3.
