Review: Mario & Sonic at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games photo
Review: Mario & Sonic at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games
by Kyle MacGregor

The prospect of Mario and Sonic appearing side by side in the same videogame was once a near-unthinkable fantasy. But it happened. Thanks to the demise of Sega's console business, the bitter rivals eventually put aside their differences and joined forces to create a novel assemblage of Olympic sports minigames for the Nintendo Wii.

That was six years ago. In the interim the unlikely pairing has since spawned a biannual franchise with three entries across as many systems. And like clockwork, just in time for February's international competition, the iconic mascots have reared their heads for fourth.

Nintendo Direct: Wii U Mario & Sonic at the Olympics

Uggggh... a new Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics is coming to the Wii U. Why am I not surprised? The game will take place in Sochi, Russia, the site of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and will use a combination of Wii ...

You're too slow! Sonic's at the Olympics in StH #242

Uhhhhhhhh... what? An Olympics tie-in? Now? Over two months since the Summer Games ended? I never thought I'd see the day when Sonic the Hedgehog was actually late for something! If it wasn't obvious, Archie Sonic the Hedgeho...

It's time to compete in the Destructoid Retrolympics! photo
It's time to compete in the Destructoid Retrolympics!
by Chad Concelmo

I can’t throw a javelin.

Well, I guess I technically can. But I can’t throw a javelin very well. Not even close to the level of one of the incredible athletes in the Olympic Games. In fact, I can’t do anything as well as those amazingly fit and impressive human specimens.

But one thing I can do: I can play the sh*t out of some retro games. I am pretty darn good at that. One of my proudest accomplishments is making it through the original Contra without dying. LET’S SEE YOU DO THAT, RYAN LOCHTE!

With the Olympics starting tonight, I thought it would be fun to host a competition for people that are experts at retro games. People like me! Welcome to the Destructoid Retrolympics! This is a trivia challenge based on your knowledge of all things retro games. Do you have what it takes to win a Retrolympic medal (the best medal of all!)? Let the games begin!

E3: Mario & Sonic visit the London Olympics in CG trailer

Somehow, the IOC lets Mario, Sonic, and their friends skip the qualifiers for the Olympics every two years. So once again, Sega is developing an Olympic sports minigame collection whose mascot crossover might have been cool ...

Quick hands-on with Mario & Sonic 2012 Olympic Games photo
Quick hands-on with Mario & Sonic 2012 Olympic Games
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Mario, Sonic and all their respective friends and enemies are back again in the mini-game collection based on the Olympic Games. There will be around 30 new events in the package plus some returning events from Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Sega showed off three new Olympic events which were cannoning, badminton and show jumping. Yes, it is pretty ridiculous watching Bowser race around on a horse.

As for the dream events, only dream discus and dream long jump were playable and both were pretty fun. Dream discus sees all the characters racing on flying discuses and collecting as many coins before they reach the finish line. Dream long jump sees the players running through a course until they're the last surviving player.

These dream games are a lot like Mario Party or New Super Mario Bros. as all four players will be playing at once and everyone can attack each other in order to gain the upper hand. The dream games also take place on stages from past Sonic and Mario games. Dream discus took place in a level from Sonic Adventure and dream long jump took place on a cute little Yoshi's Island stage.

Really, there's not much to say. If you're a fan of these type of mini-game collections and enjoyed the previous Olympic Games, then you already know if you'll be picking this up when it's released later this year for the Wii and 3DS. Also, Sega has yet to provide any assets for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games so here's the two in furry outfits. Yup.
