Dumb Idiot Ideas: The Difficult Kinect Challenge

This week, we filmed a wonderful short piece in which Bill and I discussed the lack of video games that let us play as actual animals. Unfortunately, Bill's microphone cut out mid-discussion, and the camera's face-tracking started focusing on an animated GIF of some dogs having sex I had up on my monitor behind me. So, here's what we did instead.

This Jazzpunk communist breakfast cereal is amazing

One of the difficulties with comedy is that describing or paraphrasing a joke frequently makes it cease to be funny, so it's hard to convey Jazzpunk's charm without completely squashing its humor in the process. However,...

Pizza Hut made $1M in four months through the Xbox 360

Pizza Hut's director of public relations, Doug Terfehr, has told Polygon that they've sold $1 million in pizzas through the Xbox 360 in four months. Doug goes on to say that they're "not done in" the gaming space, and the company is having ongoing conversations with other potential gaming partners. I think you all know exactly how I feel about this news.

Check out these Lightning Returns-themed Japanese snacks

Square Enix sent a little holiday gift to my office this week. They're trying to make me fat, it seems. In Japan, there's a strong tie between game marketing and snack food, so you often see game-themed snack food on conveni...

Japan has a Dark Souls-themed cafe

I've always fancied going to a gaming-themed eatery but there's a shocking lack of them where I live (wonder if I can get planning permission to build my own Deus Ex pub?). That's no issue in Japan, where Siliconera is report...

See those adorable Japanese McDonald Mario toys in action

Remember those awesome Japanese Mario Happy Meal toys we showed last week? Well now there are a bunch a video's confirming just how cool they are.  Okay... well maybe they aren't that cool, but they would look pretty classy on any gaming shelf. And who could resist Mario in a penguin suit scooting across a table?

Why is Japan's McDonald's Happy Meal so much cooler?

Take a look at these amazingly adorable Super Mario toys that will be included in Japan's McDonald's Happy Meal equivalent, the Happy Set, beginning on November 22. Two sets, which sadly in the year of Luigi are absent of Mar...

Spooky Call of Duty: Ghosts Pumpkin Bread & Seeds photo
Spooky Call of Duty: Ghosts Pumpkin Bread & Seeds
by Steven Hansen

Happy Halloween spooks and ghouls! If it feels like it's been a month since A la cartrdige's Wind Waker Pouched Salmon, that's because it has been. Rest assured, we did not OD on puns and die. Our pun tolerance transcends human sensibilities. We're all just really busy. And busty. I need to go to the gym.

Still, 'tis the seasons, and we wanted to bring you a seriously spooOOoooOOooky Halloween episode of A la cartridge. So we did! We toasted some pumpkin seeds and made some amazing pumpkin bread. How amazing? Watch the video and seed for yourself. If you don't get scared out of your wits first. Are you bready?

No more letting those jack-o-lanterns go to waste. Pumpkins are still readily available throughout November, probably on the cheap, but you can even use your current jack-o-lantern to make pumpkin bread, provided it hasn't rotted away. Or Call of Duty : Ghosts hasn't rotted your brain. Hoorah!

Finned baker: The Wind Waker HD Pouched Salmon photo
Finned baker: The Wind Waker HD Pouched Salmon
by Steven Hansen

Salad of the wind fish.

We're making some portable eats on this week's A la cartridge. Inspired by the HD release of the seafaring adventure that is by far the best Legend of Zelda game, The Wind Waker,  we have our first seafood dish of the show. Also perhaps the Hyrule-est pun count yet. We had the maritime of our lives. Dear god.

These individually foil-wrapped salmon pouches feel like Link could pull them out of his tunic at any point in time, chow down, and regain some hearts. Wind make some for yourself! Bonus points: if you're not a typical seafood fan, the topping and seasonings get rid of that oft disliked "fishy taste."

Throw one in your pocket and head onward towards adventure. Or make yourself a nice smoothie out of last week's Puppeteer recipe.

Mario SpaghettiOs!? Are we back in the 80s!?

I thought this was a joke. It's not a joke. Campbell's has partnered with Nintendo to release Mario-branded SpaghettiOs. Why, yes, it is the year 2013. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, you couldn't toss a penny down a supe...

A la cartridge: Throwing back a Kutaro Smoothie photo
A la cartridge: Throwing back a Kutaro Smoothie
by Steven Hansen

We were feeling pretty bad about ourselves after last week's Grand Theft Auto V episode of A la Cartridge wherein we made a pastrami-topped triple chili cheese dog burrito. Yes, it was as absurd as it sounds.

Accordingly, we decided to make something healthy for Puppeteer, the delightful platformer from Sony Japan. Smoothies are a cheap, quick and easy venture and manage to pack a whole lot of good taste into a small package. This one is extra good for you, too, just like how different and creative games like Puppeteer are healthy for the gaming industry amidst AAA action games and brown military shooters.

These make for a great quick breakfast or lunch. You can even parcel out your fruit ahead of time, freeze it, and always be ready to Kuta-go.

Grand Theft Swallow: 5-Star Wanted Burrito Bomb photo
Grand Theft Swallow: 5-Star Wanted Burrito Bomb
by Steven Hansen

I could barely fit it all in my mouth.

Grand Theft Auto V comes out next week, so we decided to make something fittingly huge and insane for this week's A la Cartridge. None of the fun and whimsy of last week's Dustin Hoffman x Rayman Legends crossover.

Well, that's not true. There is still some fun. I talk about dog customization and try to fit something of unrivaled girth into my mouth. Tip: three sausages is overkill. Between three of us, we finished half of this triple chili-cheese-dog, pastrami-topped burrito.

Check out the video, full recipe below, and let me know if this dish Grand Theft Auto-matically made your stomach turn. It's damn tasty in spite of its absurdity, honest.

A la cartridge: Rayman's Legendary Chilaquiles photo
A la cartridge: Rayman's Legendary Chilaquiles
by Steven Hansen

Food is good. Videogames are good. Food inspired by videogames is doubleplusgood. It's simple science. Science and art. The third episode of Steven Hansen's À la cartridge is inspired by Rayman Legends. In my quest to become the Alton Brown of videogames, will I become videogames' Guy Fieri?

Last week we went quintessential Americana with the Killer is Dead Mondo Burger. Now, we're heading south of the US border, to Mexico, to duck those murder raps and eat some Legendary Chilaquiles. Rayman Legends is a great couch co-op game and chilaquiles is a chill-and-easy dish that serves plenty.

Feel free to stir some scrambled eggs in as well. Go nuts. It's in the spirit of Rayman. I almost added candy eyeballs to everything.

This episode of A la cartridge is brought to you by Rainman's Raymond Babbit.
