Art Hawk explains DayZ photo
Art Hawk explains DayZ
by Jonathan Holmes

In games like Rust and DayZ, you run around in a world and murder and/or get murdered. These games are getting more and more popular, in a way that is different from the other games where you run around and murder and/or get murdered.

How so? Art Hawk will tell you!

If you want more Art Hawk, here's a handy playlist with all of the current episodes.

Surprising no one, DayZ reaches one million sales

Last we heard, the standalone alpha release of DayZ had passed 800,000 copies sold. It's only been about a week since and the game has reached an important milestone: one million sales. If you were wondering what kind of numb...

If you see these three guys in DayZ, start running

Yesterday, Conrad told me he was thinking of trying DayZ's alpha release on Steam. He expressed concern about getting into a player-driven game -- particularly one as Stanford prison experiment-esque as this one -- without a...

DayZ gang forces players into life or death duel photo
DayZ gang forces players into life or death duel
by Conrad Zimmerman

The new crop of open-world titles, like Day Z, give interesting insight into the people who play games. Take this roving gang of players as an example, who have encountered two people wearing the same color jacket and determine that they should fight to the death for the privilege of being allowed to continue to wear it. Here they are, playing a game in which exerting power over others violently seems to be the primary method of advancement, and instead use that power to create amusement.

It's still cruel, yet it seems altogether generous at the same time. Out of the three people held at gunpoint, only one is killed and it's done through adherence to a few defined rules. The gang even awards an additional prize to the winner, as if not killing and looting them weren't enough. It's the very definition of emergent play, a game borne of circumstances and opportunity rather than predetermination. Pretty funny too.

How to politely rob someone in DayZ

You don't always have to be a giant dick towards other players in DayZ. I mean it's still pretty dickish to rob someone, but at least it was a nice robbery. (Via Reddit)

DayZ has sold more than 400,000 Early Access copies

A Chernarus Sing Along in DayZ - Challenge Scot! photo
A Chernarus Sing Along in DayZ - Challenge Scot!
by Jamie McGinn

This week's challenge is in the Arma 2 mod DayZ, in which I have to track down another player, hope that they don't shoot me on sight, and then get them to sing me a song. DayZ is notorious for having a very hostile player base, so actually managing to even talk to another player without getting killed instantly is quite the achievement all on its own!

If you've got any ideas for future challenges you'd like me to have a go at, feel free to leave them in the comments!
