Review: Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

While Sonic Boom on the Wii U has its issues, there are also some redeeming qualities. Co-op is enjoyable, the platforming is pretty fun, and the 2D sections aren't bad. With a few more months in the oven and more polish, it could have ultimately been a decent Sonic title. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the 3DS version of Sonic Boom. There's almost nothing redeeming about it.

Here are all the amiibo waves and figures we know about

The amiibo figures out today, and in some locations, they're selling out. While Villager and Wii Fit Trainer seem to be two of the rarer figures, Marth is decidedly the one to look for, as he's currently going for $30 on Ama...

Want to watch a 12-minute Guilty Gear Xrd trailer?

For some games that have elaborate stories or lots of spoiler points, I tend to avoid any and all coverage if possible. I like going in completely blind, like the bosses of the Souls series for example. For oher titles,...

Just how rare are some of Nintendo's amiibo toys at launch?

While Nintendo provided me with the Link, Mario, and Kirby amiibo toys for testing with Super Smash Bros., acquiring the rest of the lot was completely up to me. So I decided to take a trip early this morning, survey any pote...

The Final Fantasy XV demo will be roughly two hours

Final Fantasy XV is looking pretty great overall. I'm really digging the outlandish bro-fest road trip vibe, and the visual style looks sharp as hell. To get a taste, Square Enix has a promotion where you'll be able to ...

'Free to get?' Apple changes iTunes 'free' buttons to 'get'

While pretty much everyone reading this knows that "free" is a misnomer in the mobile arena, a lot of people probably aren't aware that when they download a "free" game, the vast majority of the content can be gated off by IA...

PSA: The Smash Bros. Wii U Club Nintendo voucher is behind the cover art

This is a pretty strange PSA but I know someone is going to go on a Twitter rant after they crack open their new copy of Super Smash Bros. Wii U, so here goes. I don't know about you all, but one of the first things...

XSplit expands its free version to include watermark-free streaming

A number of tools exist that allow the average person to stream their games and garner an audience, and for a lot of people, that tool is XSplit. If you're not sold on the software yet I have good news -- the program now has ...

Nintendo Download: Super Smash Bros. Wii U!

This is easily one of the biggest weeks of 2014 for Nintendo. Both systems have some heavy hitters, but the crown jewel is no doubt Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U, which is out tomorrow. The console is also getting Watch...

Review: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

As a character, Sonic gets a bad rap these days. No matter what is announced, I can practically hear the collective groaning from my desk. Like any popular franchise with consecutive releases, some of them are going to be goo...

HBO Go is finally out on the Xbox One

It feels like I've been waiting forever, but HBO Go has finally launched on a current-gen console -- the Xbox One. While the planned PS4 app is nowhere to be found and there are no plans for a Wii U version, you can download...

World of Warcraft back up to 10 million subs after expansion release

I have been heartily enjoying the new Warlords of Draenor expansion for World of Warcraft. It evokes feelings of the franchise that are more classic in nature, which is a great thing for those of you out there who didn't...

Destiny now has a free trial promotion on the PS4

Destiny is still trucking. I'm currently sitting on a level 30 Warlock, 30 Titan, and 28 Hunter who has been stuck at 28 for over a month. I'm basically just running the Vault of Glass three times per week (my group has ...

Here's how you unlock everything in Smash Bros. Wii U

Just like Super Smash Bros. 3DS, the unlock conditions are fairly relaxed in the Wii U version. Of course there is at least one stage that's hidden behind a specific unlock condition, and most of the stage unlocks aren't apparent at first. Although this doesn't spoil any stage specifically, I'd refrain from reading the comments if you want to be surprised.

Here's how Nintendo's amiibo figures work, and how they interact with Smash Bros.

Nintendo's long awaited foray into the toy market is here: the amiibo are ready for purchase, and the flagship game, Super Smash Bros., is right on the horizon. While the toys look great in person and the setup is painless, so far the actual interactivity is underwhelming. Collector itch aside, I'd definitely recommend waiting until more compatible games are out before committing to any purchases.
