Wreck-It Ralph’s teaser poster is just a pixelated sprite

Disney’s latest CGI film, Wreck-It Ralph, will be landing in theaters nationwide on November 2. To get moviegoers “pumped,” a teaser poster has been unveiled. As simple as the poster is, however, I think it’s quite ballsy.

Let’s back up a bit. You remember what this film is about, right? There is this dude, Wreck-It Ralph, who is the villain in a Donkey Kong-esque arcade game, but he wants to break out of his villainous role and be a hero for once. Along the way, there will be cameos from actual game stars, like Bowser and Dr. Wily, as well as, I assume, gags and puns at the expense of various long-standing videogame tropes. The movie may very well be a love letter to gaming through the ages, but there’s always the risk that it could fall flat.

This poster, though… wow. Just a low-res sprite splashed against a black background. Is this a first? Has there ever been a movie poster that was just pixels on a board? Will people who aren’t attached to 80s-era games be drawn to a movie advertised in such a way? Has the line been crossed, and is retro gaming now the “in” thing amongst the mainstream? Have we made it, guys? Or am I reading too much into a single movie poster?
