Why We Can't Have Nice Things: Crytek considering DRM

0

First things first: As a PC player I'm staunchly against the inclusion of DRM (benign or otherwise) in games, because it punishes the customer and does nothing but give pirates bragging rights. I also believe that piracy is not nearly as much of a threat as publishers make it out to be, often used as an excuse to treat PC players unfairly.

That said, this is an example of why we're treated so poorly at times. Crytek is now considering implementing a DRM solution of some sort for its PC titles, including Crysis 2, which releases...tomorrow. How they're going to do it with Crysis 2 I don't know (perhaps via a retroactive patch?). Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo had this to say in a Gameshark interview:

"I know there's a lot of negative feelings toward DRM. But, I mean, what are we supposed to do? The actions of a few are causing maybe a mild inconvenience for others,"

"If I'm playing a game and it has DRM on it, do I notice? Not really. I just know that there's something going on, but doesn't really enhance (sic) my play experience. So, it's something that we'll have to look at in the future."

No doubt this is a reaction to the fact that the game was leaked almost in its entirety a month ago.

Really, pirates, stop ruining things for the rest of us. Stop giving them excuses to shaft us! Now to wait for the reaction from the internet. How many will now declare that Crysis 2 sucks anyway and that they're going to pirate it to teach Crytek a lesson?
