The Question: Would you pay $60 for a 2D platformer?

0

In our El Shaddai review this week, it was noted that quite a few comments expressed doubt that the game could be worth $60, due to the fact that it contained 2D platforming sections. This has confirmed a fear I've had that there's just no respect for classic platformers anymore, no matter how much time, effort and content went into them.

I was considering this when playing the Sonic Generations demo. It felt great to play, and I couldn't help thinking how much I'd enjoy a game that was nothing but 2D levels, without the "Modern Sonic" stuff. Unfortunately, publishers don't seem to have any faith in a retail-bound platformer, relegating such gameplay to bonus levels or downloadable games.

So what do you think? Are you against ever paying $60 for a 2D platformer, regardless of how replayable it is, how long it is, and whether or not it's any fun? Do you consider such games fit only for handhelds and digital platforms? Conversely, do you think a 2D platformer can deserve to charge full price, provided it's good enough?
