The Minecraft Middle Earth project is still spectacular, nearly six years later

'Put it out, you fools!'

I've been playing a lot of Minecraft lately, and part of that process involves checking in on past projects to see their progress. And you know what? The folks who are working on Minecraft Middle Earth are pretty damn talented.

It was started back in 2010 by user "q220," and builds are still happening as we speak. What's really crazy is that I had one window with the game, another with their own interactive map, and another with a picture of the actual map of Middle Earth from the books. Not only did they line up, but I used both as a resource to take the actual paths that Bilbo and his band of dwarves and the Fellowship took while I listened to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, and it was one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had in a long while.

Below are some screenshots that I managed to take during my travels. It's incredible what the team has accomplished, and you'll likely recognize some of the locales from the films. You can't download the map, but you can get on the server to explore if you pass the whitelisting procedures, which involves a small quiz at the start.
