Switch gets a chibi Dark Souls with Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption

Salute the art director

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption calls itself a combination of "Dark Souls-inspired combat and the intense focus of a boss-rush action-RPG, with a twist: every time you fight a boss, you must level down." If that doesn't get your attention, the deceptively cute-but-dark art should pull you in, or at least makes for a divisive comments section. I found it to be a breath of fresh air, breathing life to a genre that rarely crosses over to the Little Nightmares side. It's coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac in Q3 2018.

There's a lot more to a clone going on here. Similar to Cuphead, the game consists of back-to-back boss battles. You play the game as a sinner, Adam, who has done some heinous things in his time. Adam's got some backstory with each boss, and by crushing each one you're leveling down as your penance. It works as a sort of reverse RPG in that sense. We're talking permanent debuffs, stats, defense, armor, you name it. There's seven bosses that you can fight at the very beginning, and an eighth final one that I suppose you'll be fighting with a leaf between your legs and a rusted spatula. It's the first venture for a new studio Dark Star, composed of AAA veterans including a former senior programmer at Konami, art director at Ubisoft and technical artist at Blizzard.

Here's the Switch trailer:

Aesthetic and clever challenge mechanics aside, this game has practical added appeal to busy grown-ass children, like me. The developers are well into their 30s and don't have time to squeeze a bunch of gaming time out of their evenings, so the game is designed to give you sufficient servings of meaty battle satisfaction even if you've only got a little gaming time to spare. It's unseen if that results in a very short game, limited replay value, or a game that's so brutal that you'll be grinding the hardest mode for years in agony. We'll just have to see.

Anyway, if you're a Souls fan and check out the official site or follow their Steam page. It's also due on the Switch soon. Sinner is being published by Another Indie, who's bringing the sin to Bitsummit in Kyoto this weekend.
