The rebellion returns: Oddworld Soulstorm hopes to reinvent a classic

Quick look videos spotlight Abe's weird world

Tomorrow sees the return of one of gaming's weirdest and quirkiest franchises. It's been a long time coming, but Oddworld: Soulstorm will see brave Mudokan Abe stand against impossible odds to save his people from slave labor at the greasy hands of the Glukkons.

Developer Oddworld Inhabitants has released a quadrilogy of videos, focusing on various elements of Oddworld: Soulstorm. From the stealth gameplay and "follower management" of previous titles, to new looting and crafting mechanics. The four videos offer fans a taste of the epic adventure to come. Described as a "re-take" of 1998's Abe's Exoddus, Soulstorm is a fresh sequel to the franchise's original release, Abe's Oddysee, and will follow Abe and his friends as they continue their quest for liberation.

The digital version of Oddworld: Soulstorm launches tomorrow, April 6 on PS4 and PS5. The PS5 edition will be available to download as one of April's PlayStation Plus offerings. Additionally, anybody who purchases Soulstorm for PS4 will be able to download the PS5 edition free of charge, should they upgrade their platform at some point. Oddworld: Soulstorm will hit store shelves on July 6, so there's still quite a wait for physical release fans.

The PS5 edition of Oddworld: Soulstorm will also support PlayStation 5 Game Help. This system will allow PlayStation Plus subscribers to readily access tips and hints related to any moment in the game using PS5 Activity Cards. The developer hopes that this will prevent players who get truly stuck from searching online and risking seeing spoilers.

Oddworld: Soulstorm also launches on PC tomorrow via Epic Game Store. Oddworld Inhabitants has released the specifications for the PC edition, which are as follows:

Minimum requirements: Windows 7 64 Bit, Intel Quad Core 1.7Ghz, an Nvidia GTX 670 card (or equivalent), and 8GB RAM.

Recommended requirements: Windows 10 64 Bit, an Intel Quad Core 2.3Ghz processor, and Nvidia GTX 970 card (or equivalent), and 16GB RAM.

While Oddworld has always been something of a cult franchise, there have been very few, if any, series entries that have not delivered the twisted humor, quirky characters, dark lore, and engaging puzzle-platforming gameplay that its audience loves. Given the praise and acclaim that met 2014's "re-take" New 'n' Tasty, it stands to reason that Soulstorm is going to have been worth the wait. And best of all, there's only one more day before we find out, so stick around for our review!

Welcome back, Abe, it's been way too long.
