Borderlands 3 sets sales records for 2K and Gearbox

Cl4p-Tp defeated those stairs!

Despite numerous technical issues and people complaining about Epic Games Store exclusivity, Borderlands 3 has gone on to be a pretty damn big success. According to publisher 2K Games, the latest entry in Gearbox's looter shooter has not only broken previous records set by the series but in 2K's entire history. Borderlands 3 has managed to sell around five million copies across all platforms in its first five days on sale, generating more than $1 billion in net bookings and becoming the second franchise in 2K's history to achieve the feat.

David Ismailer, president of 2K, said, "Borderlands 3's incredibly successful launch is a result of the hard work and longstanding partnership between Gearbox Software and 2K. We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today." Ismailer also extended his thanks to the Borderlands community, praising their passion for the series that has pushed the developers to better each iteration.

As for which platform it performed best on, 2K didn't release any details. The title saw a strong launch on PC in spite of all of the Epic "backlash," beating 2K's expectations by quite a margin. 70% of consumers purchased the game digitally, which seems to be a growing trend as we move further into the future. There's also likely a ton of fans that grabbed one of the various special editions, which might account for the record profits.

All around, it seems like Borderlands 3 has turned out well. In an era dominated by similar games (Destiny, Anthem, The Division), I almost figured this series would be dead on arrival. I'm happy to see that players are hungry for a more focused experience, which bodes well for other developers following suit. Less grindy, microtransaction laden games will be better all around.
