Upon yesterday’s announcement of Star Wars: The Old Republic, many of us wondered if the MMO was eventually going to be console bound. The official line right now is PC-only, but Eurogamer was able to procure an interesting tidbit. Electronic Arts is considering bringing SW: TOR and Warhammer Online to consoles.
Electronic Arts president Frank Gibeau was fairly candid in his response to a question about bring SW: TOR to consoles at the recent press event:
We’re definitely looking at the opportunity to bring the MMO experience to console, without question. We’ve got this product, and we’ve got Warhammer at play. So we’re trying to look at the primary research required to understand how would you deploy it, what the client size looks like, how big is the back-end, what the play experience looks like… Once we’ve got some of those questions answered, we’ll be able to decide which is the right play to go after.
Although his response seems to indicate a single MMO will be brought to consoles, Gibeau clarified his statement by saying that both titles are under equal consideration at this time. It’s certainly interesting to consider playing either MMOs from the comfort of a couch. I almost pray that it doesn’t happen, because I have a feeling all of my social obligations would crumble immediately.
