The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 is now underway, and Sony has already come racing out of the gate with the unveiling of its brand new virtual reality hardware, PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2). Sony had initially announced its intention to revitalize its PSVR hardware for the PS5 platform, and has lifted the lid on the accessory’s build and features — though the visual appearance of its all-important headset remains under wraps, for now.

While we do not know what the headset will look like, we do know that it will feature OLED displays supporting 4K HDR resolution, running at 90/120Hz frames-per-second. The unit will support foveated rendering, offer a field of view of 110 degrees, and will connect to the PS5 console with a single USB-C cable. Connectivity is an important part of the upgrade, given the (literally) wiry nature of current home VR units.

PSVR2 will work in tandem with PS5’s Haptic Feedback technology, and will also utilize four-camera eye-tracking. It will be fascinating to see how developers incorporate the latter function into PSVR2 gaming. The PSVR2’s spherical controllers — which Sony revealed back in March of last year — have been officially monikered “PSVR Sense” and will feature a six-axis motion system and the Adaptive Triggers functionality of the PS5’s DualSense controller. The PSVR2 hopes to utilize its crisper imagery, headset feedback, adaptive triggering, and eye-tracking to create never-before-experienced immersion. The first game in development for the hardware is Guerilla Games’ Horizon Call of the Mountain.

“PlayStation VR2 takes VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before.” writes SIE’s Hideki Nishino. “With the headset on and controllers in hand, players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other — thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world-class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware.”

Sony PlayStation VR2 is currently in development for PS5. You can check out its full hardware stats right here.
