Sony offers official protection plans for PS3, PSP

If you're tired of being annoyed by GameStop and Best Buy employees about picking up "protection plans" for your new consoles, Sony has the answer: It's starting to offer its own.

Plans were announced today that would extend coverage for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable beyond the standard one-year manufacturer's warranty. Sony is even offering an "accidental damage" plan for their portable, which will cover things like a cracked screen, in case you drop it or that fat guy on the plane next to you sits on it.

  • PS3 – 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
  • PSP – 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
  • PSP with Accidental Damage – 1-year extension ($39.99) or 2-year extension ($49.99)

The standard warranty plans are available to PS3 and PSP (and PSPgo) owners who are still in their one-year warranty limit. The "Accidental Damage" plan is available for 30 days following the purchase date. You can call Sony (1-866-716-7669) to purchase the plan.

For better or for worse, I've never purchased an extended warranty on any of my consoles. Usually works out for me. I had some issues with my day-one PlayStation 2 where it wouldn't read blue discs, and of course I lost hours blowing into NES cartridges to get them to work. But that's about it; even the four or five Xbox 360s that got hit with a "Red Ring" were quickly replaced by Microsoft… even out of warranty.

What do you guys think? Will you pick up an official protection plan with your next Sony console?
