Sony is losing $40 a system on the PS3

Damn, that’s gotta hurt. Every time.

Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said in their earning reports that the PS3’s cost is still 10 percent higher than what we pay for it at retail. Quick math puts their loss at about $40.  AndriaSang says that this figure is current as of the end of March. No wonder Sony is down a billion dollars for the year.

And here we are asking for a price drop. I don’t think it’s out of the question, though. Sony knows that they need to move more hardware to keep up. While Sony isn’t fessing up, they do admit that costs of the PS3 will drop further.

I have an idea: cut out all of the unnecessary sh*t in the PS3. Cut out the card readers. Drop the shiny plate. Touch sensitive buttons? How much do those cost? Just make a little plastic box with a on switch and a flip-top disc tray. $200. Done.
